LIGHT is TIME / Tsuyoshi Tane( DGT) for Citizen at Milan design week

I wish I could have seen this amazing installation of seemingly ordinary objects transformed into a magical installation for Citizen at Milan Salone del Mobile that looks like suspended rain. The Light is Time installation is the result of a collaboration between Citizen watch design team and Paris-based architect Tsuyoshi Tane (DGT). Composed of 80,000 plates, the basic component of a watch, the installation creates a magical space in the exhibition. Stunning images of the installation which I'm sure is just as awe inspiring in person.

"Time is light and light is time." We found inspiration from CITIZEN 's watch-making and finally hit on this simplest of concepts: "LIGHT is TIME." Light was born at the instant of the Big Bang, the universe's beginning. From beyond the horizon, the rising Sun slowly covers the Earth in light, shadows transform into different shapes, the seasons transit colours in nature and the waxing and waning of the Moon change. When humanity noticed these things, we unknowingly created the concept of time.

CITIZEN came to take on the challenge of making watches that "time changes by light" in accordance with the company's philosophy of "watches for all citizens."
"LIGHT is TIME" is an installation of light and time. At the Triennale di Milano exhibition hall, we will present a magnificent space made from 80,000 "base-plate," the structural device that supports all of a watch's components. There, we envision a space-orchestration where light will fill the space, composing, through sound and light, a sense of light and time as yet unexperienced by humanity. In addition to exhibiting everything from pocket watches as origin (where CITIZEN first got started) to the latest satellite watches at the venue, we hope attendees will experience CITIZEN's mission in search of a discover to the question:” What makes a watch”

Time is light. If there were no light, then there would be no time. In the 20th century mankind digitized time, measured it and continued to economize our time, until eventually we forgot about its relationship with essence of light. Without light we never would have had the wonders of the universe, the richness of our planet or the joy and pleasure of our life.
"LIGHT is TIME"—the manifestation of light's return to time—is our great challenge at "21st-century light."

CITIZEN's product philosophy is "The Fusion of Technology and Beauty." With the belief that technology is meaningless without beauty, we have sought that "Beauty" in the microcosm of time. CITIZEN for the first time will exhibit at MILAN DESIGN WEEK in April 2014. The purpose of the exhibition is to demonstrate this philosophy in a venue and place far removed from our watch making roots. Reaching beyond our traditional expositions at watch and jewelry fairs CITIZEN is planning to connect to the over 320,000 influential people from more than 160 countries who attend this global design fair. Through our presence at the fair we will have the opportunity to connect with people from all over the world and share with them our vision for the future by fusing technology with design.

The installation's theme is "LIGHT is TIME." We will deliver a message to the world from Milano that CIITIZEN is a company that explores the relationship between light and time and instead of stopping in the present, CITIZEN continues its quest into the future.
