Sodastream PLAY / Yves Béhar

Talking product design today just in time for summer with an appliance that makes this time of the year more fun. 'Sodastream' are launching PLAY designed by Yves Béhar and one of the great things about the 'Sodastream', besides the beautifully minimal design with subtly rounded edges that reminds me of lego - is watching it do it's job, aerating fluids. The design in a more minimalist medium allows you to see the fireworks show of carbonation and you'll feel like a kid again!

PLAY by Yves Béhar for 'Sodastream' with beautifully paired back design, clean geometries and lines, creating a sense of fluidity and essentially showcasing what the best thing is about the sodastream, watching it do it's job.

What can you do with a 'Sodastream'? Well I'm a fan of a fantastic cocktail and let's face it who isn't and with the help of PLAY, you can create your own cocktails. I created a fantastic peach mojito with the help of mixologists at Selfridges Bubble Lounge and I'm a fan. Scroll down for a few fun cocktail recipes to try out over summer.

Wooden Source / Sodastream

sodastream has always been about ‘just in time’ carbonated water and soda making. I wanted the new affordable design to reflect this contemporary idea of making things yourself. Play is minimal by design, and ultra simple to use. Play is a fun expression of all the different ways water and soda can be carbonated.

The coolest thing about ‘SodaStream’ is watching it do its job, “aerating fluids,”
— as the brand’s spiritual founder, London distiller Guy Hugh Gilbey

Powered by a CO2 canister, the refined mechanics of the machine allow the high-gloss slider column to automatically return to the original position after being pressed, simplifying the process of carbonation. The matte texture and contrasting colour of the column and extruding base add playfulness to the machine. The 'Sodastream' carbonating bottle easily locks into a translucent polycarbonate bottle-rest with a single-push motion.

Along with it's design credentials, 'Sodastream' has an impressive environmentally friendly claims, each 'SodaStream' reusable carbonating bottle is estimated to save the environment from an estimated 1,000 bottles and cans each year. Each of the single 500ml bottles of SodaStream concentrate produces up to 12 litres of soft drink and each of these can replace 24 500ml PET bottles.

What we found is that many people wanted to serve the water directly in the ‘SodaStream’ bottle, rather than transferring it to a pitcher... The entire exercise was to create a visually refined bottle that people would feel proud to display on the table.

Here are some equipment tips for making cocktails at home too:

Cocktail shaker:  switch a professional shaker for a clean jam jar with a tightly screwed on lid

Strainer:  rather than using a cocktail strainer just use a pasta sieve or tea strainer

Jigger/Measure: Instead of buying a proper jigger, try using a standard egg cup - around 30ml

Crushed Ice: Simply wrap cubed ice in a tea towel and bash with a rolling pin
