Bill Granger, well known to Sydneysiders for his fantastic brunch, has opened his first place in London. Bill has 3 successful cafe-restaurants in Sydney - all with queues around the block. Granger & Co is located at the Notting Hill end of Westbourne Grove, an area that that I have watched undergo a change over the last few years as the boutiques stretch further in the direction of Bayswater. It's actually located next to Mary's (Portas) Living & Giving boutique for charity .
It opened quietly a few months ago and even so, the queue was out the door and waiting times were quite long - we didn't make it in on our first few attempts. Granger & Co is open all day, but they don't take bookings, which adds to the likelihood that you won't get a table without waiting or going at an unpopular time.Bluecrow finished the restaurant shop fitting for Granger & Co in Nov 2011.
As you approach Granger & Co the first thing you notice is the vibrant citrus coloured yellow awnings. The interior feels light and airy and spacious, even though it's really a single big room with a bar on one side and a kitchen at the far end. The room is elegant with its leather drapes at the door, blonde-wood tables and chairs, and lovely panelled wood ceiling & feature gold anodised lighting over the bar, I can't help but think it has transposed that same light, easy but stylish feeling from Sydney without being cliche.
I love the colour of the awnings - brighter than in the pic though
The directional panelled ceiling is a great feature
The space features large windows & benefits from a corner location
Lovely feature lighting over the bar
'I want to do a Bills-style cafe here,' says Granger, 'but I’m going to have a lot more Asian food on the menu than I do in Sydney – because living here I found you couldn’t eat it out as much. It’s also really appropriate for the climate as it’s great when it’s cold and frosty – Mediterranean food doesn’t have quite that comfort factor.’
