Renowned architect Zaha Hadid was recently commissioned by Dover Street Market, Mayfair, to create an installation in honor of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. Named 'Aqua', the monochromatic work features an undulating design inspired by the geometries of the London Aquatics Centre (also designed by Zaha Hadid Architects - see post here) , constructed from curved and morphing forms which are created with layered sheets.
Viewed through the shop window, the site-specific piece distills the fluid geometries found within the london aquatic centre. Suspended from the ceiling, individual curving sections are layered parallel to each other to collectively express the wave-like form.
‘Designing for Dover Street Market is an exciting opportunity to install a piece inspired by the fluid geometries of the Olympic Aquatics Centre: a wave of liquid, frozen in time, in the heart of London.’ Zaha Hadid
Hadid’s installation is one in a long line of daring window commissions at the store.
The Aqua installation will be in place throughout the duration of the Olympics at 17-18 Dover Street, London W1S.
